Research grounded in people.

Dr. López directs the Self-Harm Intervention and Prevention Lab. His research examines the emotional, cognitive, interpersonal, and environmental processes involved in self-harm and suicide risk, particularly among adolescents and young adults.

His work connects questions about emotion regulation and social problem solving with clinical assessment, intervention, and the experiences of young people navigating stressful environments.

Before joining Texas State in 2025, he completed postdoctoral training in UCLA’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology at George Mason University, with a quantitative methods track.

His earlier research experience includes George Mason’s Laboratory for Adolescent Mental Health Promotion, the Psychosocial Research Program at Butler Hospital and Brown University, and the Multicultural Clinical Laboratory at the University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley.

Languages: English and Spanish, native proficiency.
